The piercing sound of the smoke alarm wakes you up, and you stumble out of bed, disoriented and groggy. How long do you and your loved ones have to escape your burning home before it’s too late? 10 minutes? 5 minutes? The Red Cross can tell you.
The answer is 2 minutes. Fire experts agree – that’s about how long you have to escape a burning home. The American Red Cross San Antonio Area Chapter, a United Way partner agency, is making sure that not a second goes to waste. They are installing smoke alarms in homes and preparing families so that they know exactly what to do when an emergency strikes.
The Red Cross works to prepare communities for the worst. Neighbors in our community need help – because no disaster is a minor disaster.
The Red Cross responds to emergencies nearly every eight minutes. In the coming weeks, that’s thousands of families that will look to the Red Cross for a safe place to stay, a change of clothes, and even just a toothbrush.
The Red Cross in San Antonio helps people affected by disasters big and small and is changing lives.
The American Red Cross San Antonio Area Chapter serves 2.4 million people in 22 counties across South Central Texas from its headquarters in San Antonio and three branch offices in New Braunfels, Del Rio and Laredo.
