2-1-1 is a 24/7 stigma-free and confidential phone service dedicated to connecting people with community, health, and disaster services. When you call 2-1-1, you are connected with a highly trained call specialist who can navigate the complex system, prescreen you for possible program and benefit eligibility, and connect you to the best military or veterans resources and benefit information based on branch of service, status of service including veterans and active duty, and by category, such as behavioral health, education and employment, and financial assistance.
Out of concern about highly stressed and vulnerable military families, United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County (UWSA) created a Military Information and Referral (I&R) program in November 2015. This program helps military and veteran families navigate the robust, but complex, array of community and military support programs. The I&R Program is staffed by three veterans, referred to as Military Navigators, who assist fellow veteran and military families in navigating the maze of health and human service programs available in the San Antonio area. Although it is relatively new, the Military I&R program has already achieved tremendous success with over 10,000 calls in 2016 from active duty service members, reservists, veterans and their families. In addition, to address the needs of vulnerable military families with children, UWSA was awarded a five-year Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) Military/Veteran Prevention Pilot Program (MVPPP) grant to provide a more complete offering of wrap around support services. With over 100 families served in the first five months, the MVPP/PEI grant is providing much needed support to our military and veteran community.
2-1-1 can also assess you or your family for benefit programs and services provided by the military that are difficult to identify at times, as well as veteran and military specific programs offered in our community. There are many different benefits, programs and services available, each with different eligibility requirements. Some of the programs in our database are available to anyone Texas, while others are specific to military or veterans and their families. Our call specialists are highly trained to assess your needs and prescreen you for services and find something that is right for you and your family.
