The Boys and Girls Clubs are More Than Just "The Positive Place for Kids"

Hello!

Janet, a mother of four, has been working with The Boys and Girls Clubs of San Antonio for three summers in a row.  It's her way of being close to her kids, while offering them a safe place with sports, activities, and friends.  Three of the four children have been going to the Calderon Branch for four years, and the youngest joined when she turned six.

The kids, now ranging in age from eight to 12, love being involved with the Clubs because "there is always something to do." When the kids first started going to the Clubs, because there were so many games or activities, they never wanted to leave.  They would complain, "Why are you picking us up so early?" when Janet would arrive.

Activities are only the beginning of the ways The Boys and Girls Clubs have helped Janet's family.  The Clubs offer transportation, have a "power hour" after school to do homework, and staff members track and set goals for students.  The Clubs also offered reading tutoring for Jackie and Curtis, the two oldest, which helped them pass the TAKS test.  The Clubs' science activities, helped Jackie get a higher placement in her school.

Perhaps more important is how the Clubs have helped Curtis.  Before joining, Curtis hung out with the wrong crowd and would often get in trouble in school.  His teachers said he was ADD or ADHD and needed medication.  However, with the No-Tolerance rules for cursing and fighting, as well as the supervision and guidance the clubs' staff, Curtis has been trouble-free for two years.

This is the last year Jackie is going to be able to attend the Calderon Branch because she recently turned 13.   But instead of moving on to the Teen Center, next summer she will be volunteering alongside her mother, and could possibly obtain a college scholarship through the Clubs for her volunteer hours.

Janet and her kids are only one of the families that The Boys and Girls Clubs of San Antonio have helped by providing a safe, fun place for children.
