Ways of Caring Directory

This directory of volunteer opportunities, Ways of Caring, is the most comprehensive list of volunteer opportunities in nonprofit agencies available in the San Antonio metropolitan area. It describes the volunteer jobs in close to 200 nonprofit agencies and organizations. The information in this directory comes from the listed agencies themselves. The Volunteer
Center passes no judgment on the standards of operation of any of these agencies or their volunteer programs. Inclusion in this booklet does not imply endorsement by the Volunteer Center, and exclusion in no way implies disapproval.

Taking the Next Step.

As you browse through this directory, you will notice a wide variety of nonprofit and human service agencies located throughout the greater San Antonio metropolitan area. Only the agencies with an asterisk are funded by United Way.

When you find an agency or volunteer position that interests you, call the phone number listed for that agency, ask to speak to the volunteer coordinator and request more information about how you might get involved. We suggest that you talk to several agencies before deciding where you want to volunteer. Most agencies welcome the opportunity to show you their facilities; so make an appointment for an interview and see where you will be volunteering.

This directory gives you all of the basic information you will need:

  • A general description of the agency
  • A list of typical volunteer jobs at the agency (sometimes there are additional jobs not listed)
  • The age you have to be to volunteer at that agency.
  • When agencies generally need volunteers - daytime, evening, weekends

The directory also lists agencies that have indicated a willingness to accept court-referred community service volunteers (those individuals referred by a judge as alternative sentencing for a minor offense.) Many have restrictions as to the nature of the offense. If you need this service, please call the agency and discuss your particular circumstances with the volunteer coordinator.

We hope the Ways of Caring directory gives you a better idea of how you can be more involved in our community. Whatever your motivation, volunteering has so many personal benefits and you will be glad you decided to volunteer. You really make a differnce!
