We have work to do! Women are relationship builders and our greatest asset is bringing folks together for a common purpose and getting results! When we formed the Women's Leadership Council, we did so to recognize and honor women who make a difference. Now it's time to mobilize and focus on the critical issues that motivate and affect our community. Women are amazing. We are daughters, wives, mothers, philanthropists and business owners. We also control 82 percent of this nation's purchasing power. In fact, America's 10 million women-owned businesses employ 27.5 million people and contribute $3.6 trillion to the economy. |
| Yet, 65 percent of the poor in the United States are adult women and, among the elderly, that figure soars to 75 percent. Given this dichotomy, the Women's Leadership Council is embarking on a journey to work together with your gifts and talents to achieve measurable outcomes toward the empowerment of all women in our community.
The WLC wants to help women by:
Preventing child abuse and neglect
Ensuring proper early childhood care and education
Accessing resources to support women and their families by providing them training for skills to better compete in the marketplace
In San Antonio:
28.6 percent of San Antonio families are single head of household women
Children raised by single mothers are two to three times more likely to be raised in poverty
8 percent of children under the age of 5 and 22.7 percent of youth under 18, live in poverty
One in seven calls reporting child abuse or neglect is confirmed.
We have a moral responsibility to give hope where hope is needed. We need you, and you are a vital part of our transformation. Your passion and commitment will make a tangible difference for those who need your help. As our United Way of America Board Chair, Johnetta Cole said, "Doing for others is just the rent you pay for living on this earth." I encourage you to join me. Let's think big, act boldly and get the results we need to make a difference.
