WLC Report Card

Thriving ChildrenStrong FamiliesSuccessful Individuals

  • In San Antonio, 25% of families are headed by a single woman.
  • 45% of children enter kindergarten unprepared to succeed.
  • During 2007, there were 18,000 child abuse/neglect investigations in Bexar County.
  • The dropout rate for San Antonio youth is 44%.
  • In a lifetime, each dropout costs the nation $260,000 (health, social services, criminal justice costs and lost tax revenue.)
  • If just one year’s dropouts graduated instead of dropping out, Texas could accrue over $31 billion over their lifetimes.
  • A family of three needs to make $15 an hour in order to afford the basic necessities. In Bexar County, more than 38% of families make $14 an hour or less.
  • Over 23% of working families with incomes under $40,000 are not drawing down their earned income tax credits. For San Antonio alone, this amounts to over $85 million every year.

The Report Card is Promising and We’re Proud!

Early results from our 2007 investments demonstrate that:

  • No confirmed reports of child abuse or neglect were identified in ANY of the families participating in the Great Start program.
  • In the 150 families served in two high-risk zip codes, 98% of the children showed developmental improvements.
  • Families are gaining access to new asset-building opportunities. Over 34,000 families received free income tax preparation from the VITA Coalition, bringing back $51 million to the community.
  • Hundreds of newly engaged parents and grandparents of 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th graders are now actively participating in the six targeted schools in SAISD. Student attendance is up, negative behavior in students is down and more parents are taking their children for tutoring.

If someone told you about a single, direct way to …

  • reduce child abuse and neglect;
  • improve educational achievement and attainment
  • increase financial stability of working families
  • help children start Kindergarten ready to learn and thrive

… would you want to be part of the solution?
