Free Tax Assistance
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) provides FREE, fast and convenient tax preparation services for families earning up to $45,000 annually. All taxes are prepared and submitted to the IRS electronically by VITA volunteers and refunds, if applicable, will be received in less than 10 days. There are over 20 VITA sites around San Antonio.
VITA volunteers assist families and single or married working individuals who are eligible for tax credits including Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) benefits and Child Tax Credits (CTC) of $1,000 for each qualifying child. The tax credits go a long way in relieving a family's financial pressures. It's estimated that $86 million isunclaimed each year in Bexar County.
Without the help of the volunteers who participate in the VITA program, many whom return each tax-filing season, the Coalition could not continue to expand, reaching an increasing number of San Antonio's working families and individuals. |
The average EITC refund in San Antonio is $1,900, but it can be much higher for a family with two or more qualifying children, like the Tijerina Family, who used their refund last year to help pay bills.

Informing the community is important since an estimated 23 percent of families in San Antonio that qualify for the EITC did not claim it for 2007.
The San Antonio Coalition for Family Economic Progress, which includes the City of San Antonio, United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, the Internal Revenue Service, ACORN, Catholic Charities, Frost Bank, Bank of America, Broadway Bank, H-E-B, City Employees Federal Credit Union and the AT&T Foundation is spreading the word about VITA's FREE tax preparation services.
