Program provides free box fans and heat precautions handouts to senior citizens (age 60 and older) to help alleviate the health risks posed by severe summer heat
2009 is the 13th year of the program; during that time, the program has distributed over 52,000 fans to local senior citizens
The program runs from June 1st (kick-off at City Hall) until August 31st
Partners: Catholic Charities, City Public Service Energy, KENS 5 TV, KB Home, Keller-Williams Realty, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, City of San Antonio, San Antonio Fire Department, San Antonio Metropolitan Health Department, Community Initiatives, Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, Bexar County Sheriff's Office, and United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County
Senior citizens should request a fan by calling 2-1-1 Texas, United Way Help Line. Some cell phones may need to use 227-4357 instead of the easy, 3-digit number
The United Way will refer all eligible seniors to the location nearest their home where they can pick up a fan
Citizens can make donations to the program two ways:
Drop off a new fan (unopened, in the box) at any local fire station
Write a check (payable to “Catholic Charities Project Cool”) and mail it to
