Landsman Scholarship Now Available

The Richard and Martha Landsman UTSA/Community Service Scholarship application for 2009 can be accessed by clicking here. The four-year tuition scholarship, created by the Mr. and Mrs. Landsman in 1993, is awarded annually to a deserving high school senior who needs financial assistance to attend UTSA, has maintained a grade point average of at least 2.0 and has demonstrated outstanding community service and traits.  The Landsman award for 2010 will be presented at United Way’s annual Night of a Thousand Stars Volunteer of the Year Awards dinner held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on June 25, 2010.

Last year, Melissa E. Ramos was selected as the recipient of the scholarship by a committee of judges from the community.  Melissa volunteered with Youth Against

Gang Activity (YAGA) since her sophomore year in high school serving as president in both her junior and senior year.  She also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, and the San Antonio Food Bank.  Melissa was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2007 and received the Award of Merit Literature for her poem entitled “I Wonder Why?”

Melissa credits her parents with instilling in her the importance of volunteering because she always saw them helping people in need and lending a hand.  She realized at an early age that being involved in making things better for others made her a better person.  Melissa summed up how she feels about volunteerism by sharing this thought - “Volunteering to me isn’t about receiving community service hours, I enjoy helping others.  It’s the good feeling I get out of it knowing I am making a difference in peoples’ lives.”
