The Baby Moses Project was established to address an alarming increase in newborns being abandoned in perilous places. The mission of the project is to publicize a confidential, and safe alternative to newborn abandonment.

The Texas Baby Moses law states that a mother may leave an unharmed infant, up to 60 days old, at any hospital or fire station without disclosing her name or any information. Accordingly, the mothers who leave an infant at one of these sites (designated Safe Baby Sites or Safe Haven Sites) receive immunity from prosecution for child neglect and abandonment.

It's extremely important for a mother to take the infant into the site and hand him or her over to a site employee. The parent can voluntarily fill out a medical questionnaire which does not require disclosure of identity, but it is not required that they do so.

There are several locations throughout San Antonio and Bexar County designated as Safe Baby sites or Save Haven sites and includes all fire stations in the San Antonio and Bexar County area. San Antonio fire stations all have bright yellow and black signs designating them as "Safe Baby" sites in both English and Spanish. Anyone interested in this program can call 2-1-1 (227-4357 for cell phones) to receive information on the locations where infants can be taken.
